DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING: As a developmental editor, I can help you define, plan, and produce your project. I assess book proposals, partial drafts, and full manuscripts in terms of content, organization, emphasis, and clarity. If your book advances an argument, I will work to make sure the logic is clear. If you tell a story, I will suggest ways to heighten the narrative. If you use both narrative and argument, I will pay attention to how these two strands work together. My focus with developmental editing is not on the errors of grammar, formatting, and punctuation that copyediting addresses. Instead, I work with you to make sure your book says what you want it to say clearly and well.
BOOK COACHING: I can also help you manage the process of writing, revising, and submitting your book. In some cases, this means helping you break the project into manageable stages and establish a workable timeline. You may just want external accountability, or you may prefer detailed responses to multiple drafts as you complete them. Particularly with scholarly books, I can advise you on the submission process and help you research and select potential publishers.
BOOK PROPOSALS and QUERY LETTERS: I assess nonfiction book proposals and query letters with the eyes of an acquisitions editor, asking questions like these: Is your subject inherently interesting and have you presented it in a lively, engaging way? Have you described your audience and explained why they will want to read your book? Have you demonstrated that you are the right person to write this book? And have you included all the information an editor will look for, including details about competing or complementary books, the manuscript’s length and status, and your marketing ideas? I also help authors compose book proposals and queries.
COPYEDITING: I also offer line-by-line editing for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style. I have extensive experience following AP style, Chicago style, and the house styles of various publishers.
Email me to set up an appointment for a complimentary phone consultation. Once we have discussed your project, I will be happy to give you a price estimate.
