Kathleen Kearns
I started out in book publishing as an editorial assistant at Viking Penguin in New York, wading through the slush pile and working with editors on trade titles in both fiction and nonfiction. Moving into academic publishing, I worked for Cornell University Press for six years, first in the manuscript editing department and later as an acquisitions editor. In that role, I shepherded book projects in music, Southeast Asian Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and philosophy from the proposal stage through revision, acceptance, and publication.
After a hiatus to earn an M.F.A. in creative nonfiction, I worked as a writer and college-level writing teacher, published hundreds of articles, wrote two historical books for corporate clients, and created communications materials for nonprofits. I was drawn back into editorial work when a team of University of North Carolina researchers asked me to help them develop a book that argued for fair housing finance policies. The experience was so rewarding that I began taking on more developmental editing projects, including manuscripts by faculty members in English, political science, science and society, and other fields at UNC, Columbia, Georgetown, Drexel, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina State. Authors I have worked with recently have published or will publish their books with Brookings Institution Press, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, MIT Press, Rutgers University Press, and University Press of Florida. I am a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association in the U.S. and the Editors' Association of Canada.
I grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, and St. John's, Newfoundland. My undergraduate degree in English is from Cornell University, and my M.F.A. is from Louisiana State University. I have written for The New York Times, The New Republic, numerous university magazines, and many other print and online publications. My work has won a feature writing award from the North Carolina Press Association and the Evelyn Scott Award for Literary Nonfiction. Recently, I spent a year traveling and volunteering in the developing world and blogged about the experience at http://allthewideworld.blogspot.com/.
